What is Farm to ECE?
Farm to Preschool, or Early Care and Education (ECE), programs play a pivotal role in cultivating healthy eating habits and fostering a deeper connection to the origins of food among young children. These programs introduce children to locally sourced, fresh produce, creating awareness about the journey of food from the farm to their plates. By incorporating hands-on experiences, such as gardening activities and visits to local farms, preschoolers gain valuable insights into the agricultural process and the importance of sustainable practices. Beyond nutrition, Farm to ECE initiatives contribute to the overall development of children by promoting environmental consciousness, supporting local economies, and instilling a sense of appreciation for the interconnectedness of communities and the natural world.
Farm to ECE initiatives have demonstrated their effectiveness in increasing children's consumption of vegetables and fruits while simultaneously benefiting farmers. These programs establish connections within the community, attract new customers, and enhance the visibility of local farms.
Overall, Farm to ECE programs play a vital role in promoting food literacy, supporting local agriculture, and fostering a lifelong appreciation for healthy, locally sourced foods among young children and their families.
