What is Farm to ECE?

Farm to Preschool, or Early Care and Education (ECE), programs play a pivotal role in cultivating healthy eating habits and fostering a deeper connection to the origins of food among young children. KEY COMPONENTS OF FARM TO ECE MAY INCLUDE:

Local Food Procurement

Purchasing culturally relevant, locally grown or produced food items, such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and grains, directly from farmers or through local food distributors for taste tests, meals, and snacks.

Garden-Based Learning

Engaging children in hands-on gardening activities to teach them about food production, plant life cycles, and healthy eating habits. This may involve cultivating, nurturing, and harvesting gardens, with opportunities for taste tests within the garden environment.

Nutrition Education

Providing age-appropriate nutrition education and activities to help children develop healthy eating habits and make informed food choices. This might involve conducting taste tests or preparing dishes using locally sourced foods.

Farm Visits and Field Trips:
Arranging visits to local farms or farmers markets to expose children to the process of food production and allow them to interact with farmers and learn about where their food comes from.
